The federal Endangered Species Act requires investigations of potential effects on threatened and endangered species for projects involving a federal action or federal funding. Other species may be protected by state, local, or tribal statute. EMI biologists are permitted to conduct standardized protocol surveys for species including the Mexican spotted owl and southwestern willow flycatcher. EMI has conducted biological surveys for a variety of projects including road construction, forestry fuels thinning, and water development.
